Secondary education at the British International School, Vietnam consists of three distinct, consecutive phases. It delivers a curriculum that is both stimulating and challenging, providing a broad and balanced education that is essential in preparing students for the future. We provide the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB) as the recognised pathway to tertiary education. Key Stage 3 Three year levels Years 7, 8 & 9 (Grades 6-8) Key Stage 3 The curriculum and teaching at Key Stage 3 reflects the fact that these are the first three years of Secondary school. All subjects are taught by subject specialist teachers and a more mature and analytical approach is expected. Pupils are encouraged to develop their organisation skills and undertake greater independence in managing their own learning. “Learning to learn’ and developing study skills to make them lifelong learners is a major focus at this time. English, Mathematics and Science remain as core subjects, with Geography, History, Modern Foreign Languages, Art and Design, Design Technology, ICT, Physical Education, Music and Drama also as compulsory subjects. Vietnamese is offered at three levels according to ability and there is a structured programme of Personal, Social and Health Education. Key Stage 4 At Key Stage 4 students are prepared for external examinations, sat towards the end of Year 11. These challenging, externally assessed examinations are designed to cater for a wide range of abilities and offer a broad and balanced curriculum through a wide range of subjects including English, Maths, Science, ICT, French, History, Geography, Business Studies, Art & Design, Design Technology, Music, Drama and Physical Education. Personal, Social and Health Education continues to be taught at this time. The examination qualifications are awarded by the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form) The school is recognised as an IB World School and the IB Diploma Programme is open to all students during Years 12 & 13. Students who follow this rigorously academic and challenging Diploma Programme (IBDP) are required to study six subjects, write an Extended Essay and study a Theory of Knowledge component. Targets of personal improvement are also set in respect of creativity, action and service with each participant’s efforts and achievements recorded in a personal log. Successful completion of this course will ensure that the students are well prepared and suitably qualified in the search for placement in the most competitive of universities anywhere in the world. |
